HORNELL, NY – Police Chief Ted Murray is concerned about the safety of those who ride e-bikes. “It’s imperative that people wear helmets while riding ebikes,” Murray tells WLEA News. “A lot of these e-bikes can really go very fast. Some e-bikes go over 30 miles an hour. So we encourage people to wear helmets. I’m looking into the possibility of doing a local ordinance requiring that people operating ebikes in Hornell, and even when on these e-scooters. The e-scooters can go very fast and the potential for getting injured on those is so high.”
As far as e-bike and e-scooters on the sidewalk goes, the Hornell Police Chief has already spoken out about that. “We don’t like the e-bikes and e-scooters on the sidewalks at all. They interfere with a person walking. So it’s just like a bicycle, you can operate them on the road, but off to the right hand side. That’s what we advise people to do.”
How about gasoline powered bicycles? “Any of the gas powered bicycles are not authorized in New York State. They have to be registered and insured. Gasoline powered bicycles cannot be operated on city streets,” Murray said today.
