Mayor Buckley: No Excuse For What Happened In Washington

January 6, 2021

HORNELL, NY – From Hornell Mayor John Buckley:

The events that unfolded today in our nation’s capital are deeply troubling. I will always support the right of the people to peaceably assemble, which is guaranteed under the First Amendment of the Constitution. However, there is no excuse for breaking laws or violence of any kind. Across the nation over the past year, we have seen countless organized protests turned riots, which many times have led to violence and destruction of public and private property. Regardless of political stripes, when protests become violent, the message is lost. The “us” versus “them” mentality has to end. As a nation, we have lost the ability to listen to and understand other points of view. We can and must do better.
